Maths PD goal setting

Following our maths PD last night, please comment below with your 2-3 goals that were set at the end of the session.
We will be using these at the start of our week six PD session as the springboard for our discussion.

  1. My goals after last night's PLD are to develop a visual maths glossary for my maths children that they can interact with and add to. This is crucial to support their understanding and application of the vocabulary. I also want to use 'think boards' with my students.

    1. My maths babies have worked well to develop their own maths glossary - they brainstormed all of the words they wanted in it so far, and then developed definitions. After I typed them up they matched up the definitions - a double hit at developing understanding of the terms. I still need to use think boards - a great goal for adding into my maths planning for next week! New goal: I also want to develop a weebly to use with my maths babies to showcase their great learning.

    2. Oohh, I also want to develop a process for my Otago Problem Solving kids to follow. Thanks Katrina and Ngaire for directing me to the Mathletics resources in this area!

  2. My goals are to re-introduce some maintenance maths activities for fast finishers and to continue to develop a maths glossary in the students' books.

    1. Yellow hat- I have had discussions with my maths groups focusing on the language. We will add this language to our maths glossary. I have taught my maths class some new maintenance games - close to 100 and space zapper.

Green hat - using simple maths games as fast finishers activities, focusing on the language with my groups. Going through Figure it Out books and creating number based games.

White hat - Continue to use build on the maths glossary with my students and introduce new games.

  3. I want to be more aware of the way I question students so I don't shut down their thinking. Also, I want to develop some more resources to extend my top mathematicians.

  4. My Goals....
    - To give CPA a good go and try get students to create their own problems.
    - Create a Maths wall that's interactive for the students where they can create true or false statements.
    - Use questioning to challenge students thinking.
Maybe.... show successful learning on the blog.

    1. Dear Mr G,

I have used CPA although 'A' has been a bit of a struggle as some of the strategies were a little too technical so some groups struggled to create probs.
Wall is in infancy stages. More to come. Questioning has been good as it has got the students thinking about when strategies would work and when it would not.

      Blog needs work...

  5. My goals are to further develop mathematical vocabulary via students' personal glossaries and then to apply these terms into their discussions. I would also like to use more thinking tools and graphic organizers for gathering ideas about mathematical concepts.

  7. Catching up on the meeting from Jo's fabulous notes our goals will be to add more mathematical language into our HB - displays words and their different meanings/ways of saying them e.g. Subtraction: minus, take away, less
I also found the idea of not sharing the L.I really interesting - doing some problems and then asking the chln what they think they are learning….will be trying this as well as a lot more questioning during lessons that promotes creative thinking!

    1. I will get posters up of Maths "talk" up..still need to try not sharing the L.I! Thought when beginning a new strategy would be a great time to try this.

    2. I have done this in the past Katie, and a strategy I have often used with my babies in my maths groups over the past two years… it is great and really does get them thinking about what they are learning.

  8. I want to ensure that independent activities are purposeful, challenging and engaging. I would like to allow more time for questioning and hearing student's "think alouds". I want to continue to develop the use of Mathletics in my maths programme.

  9. My goal is to have something more than just worksheets as follow up activities.

    1. Yellow Hat - This week for numeracy follow up children I gave children a mathlectics task to complete that matched the knowledge they were working on. For their follow up activity they still had worksheet this week, oops! I did provide children with a online tool to support this work sheet though! I would like to find online interactive activities as children often find these fun.

    2. Ha! Love it! Finding purposeful follow up activities other than just worksheets can be tricky. Think about how they can share / prove their learning… can they create a blog post to teach to someone else with a wee movie showing how to use materials and imaging? Could they develop a lesson for another group? Could they create a visual for a class made maths strategy book? Love the online tool to support their worksheet idea - there is still a place for worksheets!

  10. My goals:
    - Encourage the children to share how they got to their answer beyond "I just know." - "If your brain could talk, what would it be telling you?"
    - Develop an interactive maths wall.
    - Extend 'think, peer, share' to include buddy 1 and buddy 2, giving different chn. a chance to share their answers first.

    1. Great goal Tracy, this was one of the most challenging things to glean from children when I was teaching your level - the most favoured answer was "because I'm clever," or "because my brain told me!"

    2. Adele, Juliette and I are working on these goals as a power team.
      - We have printed off resources for our interactive maths wall. We are using magic maths. We have decided to have a wall available in each HB to increase familiarity to children. They can use this resource in the mornings with their parents.

  11. I want to...
Start a Mathematics glossary display on the windows by Mathematics wall and created by the children.
Use the blog more to highlight learning, take photos of children working and with their work.
Have a go with the Think Boards- I have seen a different format to this before so will find that and compare with the one Marg gave us.

I have started writing a glossary with the children on the windows behind where I teach maths. The kids love adding new definitions onto it.
I have made one post onto the blog- need to keep this going!
      Haven't used think boards yet.

      Green Hat
I am trying to encourage children to reflect on the blog or show the blog to their parents and ask their parents to reflect on their learning.

      White Hat
It was easy to start the glossary with the more able students so need to incorporate this in with all of the other children. I need to somehow remind myself about taking photos and posting on the blog. I could also use the blog to ask the children to reflect on their learning as a follow up activity. I need to find the other think board I had seen before and compare with the one we received last week and decide how best to use these- I can then laminate these to use with my numeracy groups.

  12. Incorporate more problem solving activities into my weekly planning.
Encourage the students to use more mathematical chat during discussions.
To create a language glossary with terms covered during units which can be regularly referred to.

    1. Hey Kent, I know you take the higher level children… I have a lot of Otago Problem Solving materials that might be useful for you? You are welcome to use them in your HB - would also be great practise for the kids before OPS starts this year! Two birds with one stone, love it!

    2. The students have been working on problem solving strategies as part of their weekly tasks. Great to see the strategies being used and being able to question the students on how they arrived at their answer.

The maths glossary goal is going well and students are adding examples of strategy and associated language. This should help with my other goal of hearing more mathematical talk between students.

    3. Continued to develop the maths glossary including definitions and visual examples.

  14. Red Zone:
    - Caitlin and I are thinking about how we can teach collaboratively, team teaching, as opposed to clustering the children. How can we better use Nathan as a rover? This could be to monitor the practice or application stage, depending on the needs of the group. What should numeracy look like in the Red Zone? What does team-teaching numeracy look like?

    Bianca:
    - encourage student conversations through the practice and application stage
    - use ICT to record learning journeys, ideas and strategy development
    - change the way I plan and think about planning, incorporating flipped classroom for higher levels and the opportunity for student-led workshops. Include buddy and group discussions using question cards and prompts to develop that meaningful conversation

    1. Cailtin and I have discussed the use of mathematical language and have begun maths glossaries in the back of books. Exploring what these words mean and how to apply them

    2. We have decided to add an additional session per week based purely on problem solving. In terms of team teaching, we need to sit down as a team and plan this. This will be a BIG change. In terms of using Nath/ Chris, they have been focusing on children during the "practice" stage.
Teachable Moments: developing mini teachers and experts for other children to get support from.
Have tried a flipped classroom approach. Clearly going through the concept/ practice and application stage. Discussing mathematical language and adding terms to the glossary as they come along. Have created conversation cards and question cards for the children to use during the practice stage.

    - We want to start a maths vocal wall. This will be created with the children, and added to during the year.
    - We are going to try using 'think boards' as a way for children to articulate their thinking in more than one way.
    - Maths celebration books. Using these to show what is happening during maths time and show what the children have been working on. Photos and videos could also be posted on our blog.

    1. Started our maths vocal wall. This was done as part of our 'maths attack' programme, and was really interesting to highlight gaps in students' understanding of specific concepts. We have included this as part of our planning, so it can be reviewed regularly.

We have collated students' work for 'maths attack' knowledge and made these into books. These are displayed in the classroom for children to read. We have also taken photos and have done a blog post about 'what happens during our maths time?'.

  16. Junior Blue Y2's:
We are aiming to develop our questioning skills to maximise learning within the group. We also want to further develop our maintenance activities to ensure they are purposeful and meet needs.

    1. Our aim is to add one quality new maintenance activity per week - this has been achieved this week!
With the questioning skills, we are going to laminate the question stems given to us by Marg to keep with our planning/teaching.

    2. Great stuff going on so far KC. Students knew where they needed to be in maths and they were able to work in the appropriate zones for what they were doing. KC said the 2 probs worked well as a group but struggled to complete independently. Tau ke!!
