I recently went to a course on Successful Strategies for Struggling Readers with Neil MacKay at Seven Oaks School.
Neil's main focus was to focus on "Smart Reading". This involves the following stages
Stage 1- Title
The title often suggests a series of informed guesses regarding the likely content.
Stage 2- Captions and Pictures
They continue the guessing of the content, and refine their guesses
Stage 3 Questions
Pair read all the questions. This is "Work smart rather than hard".
1. Many questions can be answered without reading through the text.
2. You get some "Free gift" answers often in later questions.
3. "If in doubt leave it out" always do the easy ones first then go back
Stage 4- Read
Opportunity to look for the answers and confirm
Neil had a group of students demonstrate these stages by using a high end piece of reading about Venus. The group consisted of 14 Year 7-9 students who had a range of reading abilities. By following these stages most students were able to answer 4 of the 7 questions before even reading the piece they then worked together on Stage 4 to to gain the last 3 answers. All students were actively engaged regardless of their reading level.
This process was quick and allowed all students to move quickly through an interesting article rather than ability based text which can often lack interest for low ability readers. It then allowed the students to progress onto other activities using Blooms Taxonomy.
He used a key saying the whole way through the course when referring to struggling readers
"Slow readers are still smart thinkers"
