Junior Blue - Year 2

We were concerned with our tail of children who were identified as low and hadn’t made much progress in maths. We really wanted to target these children because they were mostly achieving well in other areas of the curriculum however they seemed to have a block when it came to maths. Helen last year had worked with a similar group of students who were very responsive to the Numicon programme and made good gains following intervention. This seemed the best approach to address the needs of the students we had identified this year. Initially these children who were all at the same level, worked together in a group. Eventually the majority of students made gains and they had to be moved into a new group. This new group had a mixture of Numicon and NDP based teaching. After several weeks they were showing more confidence in mathematics, especially with their number knowledge. Two students have shown progress in terms of their stage changing, others have anecdotally shown more thorough understanding of concepts.
Erin has since attended a Numicon course and we are both inspired to take up this approach heading into 2015 because we believe it provides more depth.
